Data-driven modelling of biological multi-scale processes

چکیده
Biological processes involve a variety of spatial and temporal scales. A holistic understanding of many biological processes therefore requires multi-scale models which capture the relevant properties on all these scales. In this manuscript we review mathematical modelling approaches used to describe the individual spatial scales and how they are integrated into holistic models. We discuss the relation between spatial and temporal scales and the implication of that on multi-scale modelling. Based upon this overview over state-of-the-art modelling approaches, we formulate key challenges in mathematical and computational modelling of biological multi-scale and multi-physics processes. In particular, we considered the availability of analysis tools for multi-scale models and model-based multi-scale data integration. We provide a compact review of methods for model-based data integration and model-based hypothesis testing. Furthermore, novel approaches and recent trends are discussed, including computation time reduction using reduced order and surrogate models, which contribute to the solution of inference problems. We conclude the manuscript by providing a few ideas for the development of tailored multi-scale inference methods.

Multi-Scale modelling of the Bile Acid and Xenobiotic System
Systems biology has developed considerably in the past decade combining the different disciplines of mathematical modelling, computational simulation and biological experimentation facilitating the quantitative analysis of biological systems. This is often severely hampered by the lack of time-resolved data which ultimately leads to problems in validating any models created. To address the inhe...

متن کاملSensitivity Analysis in Systems Biology Modelling and Its Application to a Multi-scale Model of Blood Glucose Homeostasis
Biological systems typically consist of large numbers of interacting components and involve processes at a variety of spatial, temporal and biological scales. Systems biology aims to understand such systems by integrating information from all functional levels into a single cohesive model. Mathematical and computational modelling is a key part of the systems biology approach and can be used to ...
متن کاملA Hybrid Approach to Model Nonstationary Space-time Series
In recent years the Space-Time Autoregressive Moving-Average (STARMA) model family has been proven a useful tool in modelling multiple time series data that correspond to different spatial locations (which are called space-time series). The STARMA model family is a statistical inductive model that can be used to describe stationary (or weak stationary) space-time processes. However, in real app...

ABSTRACT: In this study, adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system, and feed forward neural network as two artificial intelligence-based models along with conventional multiple linear regression model were used to predict the multi-station modelling of dissolve oxygen concentration at the downstream of Mathura City in India. The data used are dissolved oxygen, pH, biological oxygen demand and water...
